The southern shores of the Caspian Sea, with favorable environmental conditions and strategic maritime and infrastructural potentials, have long been one of the largest scientific, technical, cultural and economic centers of Iran. The geographical location of the southern shores and ports of the Caspian Sea, and the efforts of seafarers, craftsmen, businessmen and scholars to link commerce and scientific, technical and cultural exchanges with neighboring areas and the surrounding world, are worth exploring at every historical interval. The southern slopes of central Alborz have long since become part of the ancient Khorasan Road, an area that has extensive connections with its neighboring areas, and the cultural, scientific and economic world of the East. It has the longest shores of Asia and South China, the Mediterranean and the westernmost of Europe. The present study seeks to draw upon the archaeological data, interactions, and scientific, technical, cultural, and economic transactions of the Caspian Sea coasts and harbors with the southern slopes of central Alborz in the Middle Ages.
